Eight years ago, Alekss Kulikovs was born in England. His life has turned in to a battle with a serious disease. This disease has begun with an accident in early childhood. The return of the family to Latvia – the homeland of the mother, Ilona – heralded the beginning of a new life. However, when Alekss was only 1 year and 3 months old, he got rotavirus. An unfortunate event has taken place during treatment in the infectious disease department of Jekabpils Hospital. Due to malpractice of the nurse, who performed the injection, the nerve in the boy's leg was damaged, resulting in his lengthy treatment and rehabilitation.
The last few years for Alekss have been filled with painful procedures, rehabilitation and searching for a solution to his problem. The situation was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, when access to doctors became even more limited. Difficulties with mobility, constant pain and the need for specialised orthoses for walking became a huge challenge for the family. Travelling to Riga for medical care is expensive and Ilona's financial resources are extremely limited.
Since then, the life of Alekss and his family has changed dramatically. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, the boy's health condition has not improved to the desired degree. At the age of 4, despite the treatment he received and the doctors' hopes that the leg deformity would correct on its own, the family had to face reality: Alekss could not walk without assistance. During all this time Ilona, as a single mother of two children, faced financial and emotional difficulties trying to provide her son with proper care and treatment.
The story of Alekss Kulikovs and his family is a reminder of the importance of support and attention to those in a difficult life situation. The contribution of everyone who responds to a call for help can bring hope and change life for the better. The opportunity for a young boy to begin smiling, playing and to lead an active life like his peers depends on society's willingness to lend a helping hand and show compassion.
Everyone who wants to help Alekss Kulikovs can call the charity phone number or transfer funds to the account of the “Ar Mīlestību” foundation. It is important to remember that even a small contribution can be decisive in the fight for health and happy childhood of Alekss.
Currently, a support account has been opened for Alekss through the charity foundation “Ar Mīlestību”, which aims to raise funds for orthoses and for the rehabilitation course in the Poga centre. The total amount needed to cover these expenses is 3,216 EUR. This includes the cost of orthoses and the necessary rehabilitation, which can significantly improve the boy's quality of life and give him a chance to live without pain and to start walking normally.
